Finding Fiction Friday - Venus Cahill

Today I get the privilege of introducing Venus Cahill, author of "Cupcakes for My Birthday".  Venus is a voracious reader and has channeled that into her passion  for writing.  Let's get to know Venus!

You can blame my parents for my love of reading and my personality! My first vivid memory is of my mother sitting me down on the potty with a book in my hands. Ever since then I will read anything available including extremely outdated magazines and shampoo bottles (rinse and repeat). As far as my personality, when you are named for an amatory Roman Goddess you can’t help but start reading Harlequin novels when your classmates are still reading Judy Blume.

When I was a teen my father used to yell at me to get outside in the fresh air and I would have to sneak a book down my pant-leg, which was no easy task seeing as I was (and still am) a supreme klutz who trips over her own feet at least twice a day.

I usually have a minimum of four books on the go at the same time. I read fiction and non-fiction anything I can get my hands on; I love kilted hotties, demons with hearts of gold, and shape shifting Alpha males. My favorite heroines are curvy gals, after all I find them easy to relate to. However my favorites are happily-ever-after romances.

First, let’s get to know you a little better, Venus.  How did you get started writing, and what made you decide to take a shot at getting a story published?

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. I was making up stories in my head before I could properly hold a pencil in my hand. If I recall correctly my first stories were written with a crayon.

When I was younger I was so shy about sharing my writing, I guess I still am. It’s hard to put yourself out there and let yourself be so vulnerable. I decided to try to get published so that people would stop seeing what I did as a silly hobby. It’s amazing how some people don’t think what you’re doing is important until you are making money and getting loads of recognition. I was hoping the interruptions would end once I was considered a professional – how wrong I was J

We know what your bio says.  Tell us one thing about yourself that you think might surprise us.

I love learning about new cultures and then I tend to immerse myself in what I’ve learned J

How did it feel to learn you were being published?

Surreal. It still does feel that way.

On to the novella “Cupcakes for My Birthday”, I’m curious to know how this story came about.

I was thinking about writing an entry for the Tattoo Anthology XOXO Publishing has and before I knew it Hunter was demanding I introduce him to the world. He’s a pretty determined guy so he wasn’t easy to ignore.

What do you think it is about society today that “curvy” women are not more prominent in media and art?

I think companies in general make so much money off peoples’ insecurities that it just isn’t financially feasible for them to promote self-acceptance and happiness. It’s sad really society has spent years chipping away at girls and telling them how they should look and now it seems as if boys are being pulled into the tangled web of this as well. We need to promote health and acceptance, not judgment and ignorance.

What about being published and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

How genuinely approachable some of the biggest names in publishing are. I find myself going all fangirl sometimes but so many people are positively fabulous.

It’s been over a year since “Cupcakes”.  Do you have any upcoming works or even just ideas bouncing around in your head?

I’m just polishing up two more novellas and I’m hoping XOXO Publishing will get them into the hands of all the people who have been asking for them. I’m also working on a few more stories and I have hundreds of ideas swimming around my head at any given moment.

What other things besides writing do you have going on that keep you busy?

My full time day job keeps me very busy. I also review and edit. And I’m hook on a few Facebook games and am surprised to see how much time I waste on those.

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

1. What is your favorite word?
Reverie
2. What is your least favorite word?
Supposably
3. What turns you on?
Kind eyes and a sexy smile. Turtlenecks seem to really do it for me too J
4. What turns you off?
Lying
5. What sound or noise do you love?
When babies belly laugh and my cats’ snoring and purring.
6. What sound or noise do you hate?
A lot of noises really irritate me. Mostly high pitch noises, like appliances humming and dogs or children whining.
7. What is your favorite curse word?
I admit it – I use the f-bomb.
8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I’d love to be an activities director at a retirement home. I’d love to be able to work with diverse people and do things that range from physical activities to learning different cultures and histories and teaching people something fun and different.
9. What profession would you not like to do?
Teacher.
My sister is a teacher and don’t tell her I said this but she is fabulous. She has the respect of her fellow staff and the administration but more importantly that of the children she teaches. She makes a huge difference in the lives of so many who need it. She puts in extra time, spends so much of her own money and society treats her like a glorified babysitter. Sure there are horrible teachers out there just for the pay and the holidays, but there are people like that in every profession. Teachers are so undervalued and we have only ourselves to blame when the future comes back to bite us on the butt!
10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Thanks for all the chuckles kiddo!
11. What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you?
If you were a tree, what tree would you be? I heard this question years ago I think it might have been a Barbara Walters parody. But I gave it some serious thought. There is a big beautiful tree near where I grew up. It's in the middle of a field all by itself, within view of almost everything but still all by itself. It has always called to me and I feel an affinity with it.

Venus, thanks so much for spending time with us.  Can you let us know where to follow you, and where we can go to purchase your work?

Thank you so much for having me!

Finding Fiction Friday - Debra Jayne East

Today I'm pleased to welcome Debra Jayne East to the blog to talk about her inspiration for writing and her book "Radiance: Love After Death".  But first, I'd like her to introduce herself ...

My name is Debra Jayne East and I was born the oldest of six girls in Martinsville, Virginia. For as long as I can remember, I have loved to keep journals, write poetry and short stories. I researched my family tree and suddenly, I understood why I was drawn to writing. My distant relative, Violet Florence Martin was an Irish author, born in 1862, who co-wrote a series of novels with her cousin Edith Somerville under the pen name of Martin Ross in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Learning about my heritage encouraged me to follow my dreams. After I encountered a near-death experience during a routine surgery, I knew my time had come to follow my heart and realize my calling to be a published writer. My first novel, Radiance: Love after Death, was released by XOXO Publishing.

First, let’s get to know you a little better, Debra.  How did you get started writing, and what made you decide to take a shot at getting a story published?

My first love of writing started in my teens. I started jotting down my thoughts in a journal. From there, I progressed to poetry and song writing. Not only did I write songs, but performed them in a singing group with my daughter Misty.

After several years of doing that, I began to write short fiction pieces thinking someday, I would love to do a complete novel. But you know it goes, things get put on a back burner until you get time to do it.

We know what your bio says.  Tell us one thing about yourself that you think might surprise us.

I have a lot of interest in astronomy and UFO studies on disclosure. I read every book I can get my hands on. Why you might ask? Growing up in Virginia, my family experienced two sightings which are hard to forget to this day. Then, in1987, my parents found strange markings in their back field after a large rash of UFO sightings in the area. Very strange to say the least. It's something that nags you in the back of your mind. What if they’re real? I certainly want to know!

How did it feel to learn you were being published?

I literally jumped for joy. I think I scared my dog out of his wits! I had no doubt when I sent it off that it would only be a matter of time before it would be published. Jack London got turned down hundreds of times before White Fang got accepted. It took about three months until I got the word that XoXo Publishing had said yes to my work. I was one happy lady!

So let’s talk about your novel, “Radiance: Love After Death”.  This story just seems so intriguing, tell us about it and where the idea for it started to blossom.

About eight years ago, I had a near-death experience during a routine knee surgery. I realized I may not have tomorrow to accomplish my dream of being a writer. I wasn't sure where to begin though. My idea for Radiance: Love after Death started from finding a crooked heart-shaped stone in the grass. I found it when I was very depressed from going through a divorce. The message it gave me was that no matter what shape your heart is in, that it's still a heart and you can still love. I thought it was a message worthy of being shared with others. So, I incorporated the message into a paranormal romance story.

I have to admit, the cover for “Radiance” I find just stunning.  One of my favorites.  If you don’t mind me asking, who was the cover artist, and how much did the two of you collaborate on the cover?

Thank you Aaron. I think the cover is amazing as well. Paul Beeley of Create Imaginations worked with me for over two weeks to get it just right. I gave him ideas which he kept tweaking until he came up with the final result. One thing I can say about Paul is he really wants you to be satisfied with his work. I wanted him to portray an idea and his solution of what I wanted was beyond what I expected. You can see his work here: http://create-imaginations.com/

What about being published and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

Well, I think that writing the book is the easy part. Promotion is not easy to learn all at once. There is a huge amount of social venues you have to learn to promote in. Just when you get excited about learning one media site like Twitter or Facebook another one pops up. There are always new things to learn every day. It's never boring at all and I  do enjoy learning new things. I never even knew how to type when I first started. I taught myself. You learn to do, what you love doing.

It’s been over a year since “Radiance”. Do you have any upcoming works or even just ideas bouncing around in your head?

I just had a flash fiction piece just published called, "Miracle in the Arizona Desert."

I also have a novel called Crimson Snow coming out in a couple of months. You can read the first chapter free here: http://debrajayneeast.blogspot.com/2013/01/crimson-snow_14.html

What other things besides writing do you have going on that keep you busy?

When I'm writing, I love to do research for my books. I'll take pictures of old houses, interesting people and watch movies on whtever subject I'm writing on. I enjoy seeing the whole picture come together for my storyline. When I'm doing things just for fun, I have other things I enjoy doing. Photography, volunteering and star-gazing take up quite a bit of time. I also love spending time with my grandchildren.

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

  1. What is your favorite word? Grace. It's a word to live by and hope for. Every day is a gift and grace helps us manage through all the trials and heartaches.
  2. What is your least favorite word? I would have to say the word don't. Whenever my teacher would ask us to do something and we would say, "I don't know how," she would say knock off the last two letters and start from there and get it done! After a while, we learned not to say it so much.
  3. What turns you on? Compassion. Show me a guy who loves babies, animals and the less fortunate and I'll show you a very appealing man in my eyes. The other thing is seeing a man in a white shirt and dark jeans. Oh, my!
  4. What turns you off? People who criticize others less fortunate. Just because others may not have your education, upbringing or success does not mean you are any better than they are.
  5. What sound or noise do you love?  I love the sound of rain. Just give me a rainy night on a tin roof anytime, cause I'll sleep like a log!
  6. What sound or noise do you hate? The sound of suffering. Whether it's crying  from loss or pain or even regret it's all heartbreaking.
  7. What is your favorite curse word? I make it a point to never curse. My mama raised me better as we say here in the South, lol.
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?  Photography would be my first pick. I am taking a course right now. There is nothing that inspires me like a sleeping child or pictures of animals or nature.
  9. What profession would you not like to do? Lawn maintenance. Mowing my yard is not my favorite things to do. Thank goodness my two sons do it for me
  10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God to say when you arrive at the pearly gates? As a firm believer in heaven, I hope He says my name and you are at the right place!
  11. What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you?  It would be this: What writer would you like to meet past or present that you would you like to have lunch with? My answer? Shakesphere would be my choice. He's been a staple of Literature forever. The first time I read Romeo and Juliet, I was mesmerized. Can you imagine your work being on every book shelf and also being taught in college and high school? Can you imagine his face as he says; My books are on what... a kindle? I would love this! We have come a long way since then.

Debra, thanks so much for spending time with us.  Can you let us know where to follow you, and where we can go to purchase your work? Thanks for having me, it was a pleasure! My links are below:

Finding Fiction Friday - Nikki Noffsinger

This week on Finding Fiction Friday, I'm pleased to bring you Nikki Noffsinger! Since she can do a much better job of introducing herself than I can ... let's meet her!

Being a mother of 2 sometimes makes one wonder, "Are the monsters running around the house scarier than the ones I write about?" I haven't answered that question just yet! My name is Nikki Noffsinger and I am the author of Cursed Awakening published by XoXo Publishing with cover art by Kayden Mcleod. I write all sorts of stories but my favorites are all inspired by my love of fantasy and the paranormal. I started at a tender age loving both books and horror movies and writing paranormal romance gives me a vehicle. I am proud to also be part of the XoXo Publishing team.

As a mother, I am also very excited to announce that my publisher has contracted two new Children's Books that I've written, a very exciting change in direction, but one I am very proud of, and hope will be of interest to parents and their kids! More news to come about that and covers will be revealed soon, as well, and posted to the Coming Soon page of my site as soon as they're available.

First, let’s get to know you a little better, Nikki.  How did you get started writing, and what made you decide to take a shot at getting a story published?

Well Aaron, I was really shy as a child and I never really felt like I fit in and I was desperate for attention. Writing became the vehicle in which I found a voice and found a way to tell stories that I liked reading.

We know what your bio says.  Tell us one thing about yourself that you think might surprise us.

When I was sixteen, my younger sister and I were just at that age where we were butting heads. One night our fighting (which was her fault btw) had gotten us grounded and I was furious so I spent like the entire night writing a story called: Sister Mine, about Siamese twins who were separated and while one sister was very good and the other was truly psychotic. I tied it with a big ribbon and put it on my sister’s pillow and went back to my room and waited. It seemed like I waited forever until she began shrieking. It was the one and only time I used my writing as a weapon.

What was your first publishing experience like? How did it feel to hear you were being published?

My first publishing experience was a nightmare. I wrote a story and finally got the nerve to just put myself out there and lo, Publish America was there to feed upon me and that is what they did. At first I thought my dream had finally become a reality and it was short lived. When I got my author’s copy-my story had been hacked to pieces. Whole paragraphs were cut off and sentences were clipped. Then they were asking for more than thirty dollars for a soft cover edition of my book. It was then that I started digging and found out the truth-they were a vanity press and I had signed over my precious creation to them. I’m still fighting to this day since I’ve not received a dime for the book nor have I bought into any of those offers they send. These people prey upon authors and I work endlessly to get the word out there. RUN AWAY FROM PUBLISH AMERICA! I have about four more years on my contract with them unless I want to pay 300 dollars for it.

After your first work came the “Lost to the Night” anthology.  How did your participation in this project come about? And tell us a little about that short story, “Night Lessons”.

Denyse Bridger asked me from the get go to be part of “Lost To The Night”.  The inspiration for “Night Lessons” actually was inspired by Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher” because that was what I was listening to. The story takes place in a fictional small town where all the young women have got a thing for the English Lit teacher that teaches Classic College Literature but what they don’t know is that the sexy Professor Dante Notte is a vampire. Dante doesn’t mind being a flirt but he’s grown rather bored with the women who throw themselves at him physically and mentally until a little bookworm crosses his threshold and she’s the first person that has awakened him in over century. However, Ariel Mathias has a secret of her own and she can’t afford to let her guard down because more than just her heart can be broken.

The novel “Cursed Awakening” came out next, in 2012.  What attracted you to write a shifter novel?

After I wrote Renegade Night and sometime before I had written my story for “Lost To The Night Vol.1” I was wanting to try my hand at a shifter book but I had way too many ideas. Then one afternoon, The Oprah Show came on-and usually I don’t watch but for whatever reason I did that particular episode. It showed the plight of the Native American Reservations and people. I was horrified at how really poor our Native Americans are having to live. Then the next evening, I watched this special on 60 Minutes about women of the LDS church and those who had fled. It was those two stories that intertwined and inspired Cursed Awakening. I had always known if I did as shifter book I wanted a Native American theme to it anyhow because I have a great love of Native American history and lore.

“Lost to the Night Volume 2” was just released a couple of weeks ago!  You continued with the shifter theme with your story “Feral Fate”.  I think it’s safe to say we can expect more shifter stories from you?

Yes, Aaron I would love to continue with the Wahpetons and even come up with some new ones. In addition to Feral Fate, I am working on the second novel to follow Cursed Awakening which features the mighty clan chieftain, Shiloh Red Cloud and Nyx’s other older and rebellious sister, Lahni.

What about being published and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

I guess the question should be what hasn’t surprised me. I always thought that writers write books, then they send in those books to publishers or they self-published their books and if you were good enough you and you know what I have realized I don’t know squat about the publishing biz. What I do know is that authors who have a publisher let alone a literary agent have EARNED it. Unless they are those subspecies of writers who plagiarize right under the radar and slime their way in on the road to author fame, authors who have made it have earned it. If this is something one wants to pursue, then one must have more than just a desire-they have to need it like they need oxygen for their lungs.

Do you have any other upcoming works or even just ideas bouncing around in your head?

I always have ideas bouncing in my head. Sometimes I feel as if I have democratic conventions set to the music of Mozart’s Figaro. Right now I am working on the second book in the “Cursed Awakening” series and my first erotica novel, “The Blood Courtesan”. I’m also working on a collection of five short stories that are all paranormal romances.

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

  1. What is your favorite word? Dorko-I use it a lot, just ask my kids.
  2. What is your least favorite word? Anything that derives itself from hate.
  3. What turns you on? A great sense of warped humor, wit, a kind heart, confidence, and jeans that fit tight in all the right places.
  4. What turns you off? Aside from ignorance, bad hygiene and fanny packs.
  5. What sound or noise do you love? Laughter, a great band that is tearing it up, the rain and gentle wind blowing wind chimes.
  6. What sound or noise do you hate? Anything remotely sounding like a tornado or tornado siren. My son howling about how life is unfair(I think he trumps the tornado siren), and my husband’s snoring.
  7. What is your favorite curse word? I don’t know…I use most of them quite often and feel quite fondly about all of them.
  8. What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt? Not answered ;)
  9. What profession would you not like to do? International Woman of Mystery
  10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? “I thought you were never going to get here! Okay, we can start the party now! Cue the music people.”
  11. What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you?  “What is the most important trait that your characters share?"

Nikki, thanks so much for spending time with us.  Can you let us know where to follow you, and where we can go to purchase your work?

Finding Fiction Friday - Gina Cianfarani

Today I am very excited to welcome someone from the "other" side of the book business - president of XoXo Publishing, Gina Cianfarani!  Let's pick her brain for a bit, shall we?

Gina Cianfarani is a well-known publisher, public speaker and sous chef. Gina lives in Toronto, Canada with  her two  children and a mini farm consisting of 3 angel fishes, two Canadian geese’s, and a whole family of raccoons that her children named, “the Nicos Raccoons”,  which is now a children's anti-bullying series coming out with XOXO in Nov 2013.  Of course there is also the family pet, a sweet tempered and all bark kind of “dude”  pug named, Lucky.   Gina's latest project is Touch a Soul, and the Catering Ladies, a catering company.

Gina, how did you get started in the publishing business?

I’ve been in the business all my life. My father passed away 6 years ago and he was a journalist with the Italian Canadian newspaper Corriere Canadese, and radio broadcaster of our own radio program on Chin Radio International, L ’Eco Del Lazio. Therefore my passion for writing, broadcasting and publishing’s comes from my dad.

What genres does XoXo Publishing work with?

We are open to all kind of submissions from young adult, children, to literary fiction and nonfictions manuscripts. We are seeking high quality stories that will stand out and grab our attention.  Unique stories with an emotional intense voice, a story that will make the readers want to escape and want to read your second book with us.

What are some things authors can do to help you out, both before submitting and after getting their work accepted?

Many authors
do not comply with our guidelines unfortunately they do not read our submission guidelines pages which are posted on our website and blogs. http://xoxopublishing.blogspot.ca/p/submissions-guidelines.html

If they would take a few minutes to read over and follow our guidelines they have a better chance at being accepted by us.  Submit your complete manuscript as an attachment; include your word count, genre and full real name and pen name.  Our Submission Editor email is: cynthia@xoxopublishing.com

If you could tell prospective authors one thing to NOT do, what would it be?

Never tell a publisher that they should handle all of their book promotions.
You’re either serious about your writing career or you’re not. I’d suggest that you read my blog

Here at XoXo Publishing we work together as a team. I always make sure that I or one of our in house promoters will help them with promotions by helping our authors write out a marketing and promotional plan to ensure successful book sales.  I believe that as a publisher we always will play a major role in marketing and publishing your books, but it’s up to you to play your part by following through with your plans.  I cannot stress enough for our authors to learn how to promote and market their for themselves or seek out a promotional services to help them out.

Do you have any big news you’d like to share about XoXo Publishing?  Any big stuff happening in the next few months?

I’m really excited about our new divisions at XoXo Publishing.  We have launched our print program and it’s doing very well, and our YA and children website will be launched at the end of this year.  Therefore we are once again open for submissions.

I know you’ve also written for publication.  What experiences have you been able to take from writing to publishing and vice versa?

I have taken my experience from both of my past journalism and broadcasting careers and combined them both to successfully implement what I am doing now.

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

  1.       What is your favorite word?  Oh gosh
  2.       What is your least favorite word? B*tc*
  3.       What turns you on?  My soul mate
  4.       What turns you off?  Lairs and wanna beesss.
  5.       What sound or noise do you love? Whispering his name;)
  6.       What sound or noise do you hate? Loudness
  7.       What is your favorite curse word? Lol va fan Napoli another work for f*u*k off nicely in Italian.
  8.       What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I’m already own a catering company, I used to teach. Maybe go back to school and become a lawyer.
  9.       What profession would you not like to do?  Oh gosh, I was becoming a nun then I got hit by reading those aka trashy books which I still have on my classic bookshelf.  (joking)  I realize that becoming a nun wasn’t for me.
  10.       If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? My gosh Gina, you sure took a long time to come back where you belong welcome home.
11.  What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you?

Good question.  I will share a personal experience with you as a writer.
I kept on submitting my first manuscript which had been rejected more then 5 + times, meaning 11 rejections in all. So I approached a Harlequin author while she was here in Toronto and I told her to please read my manuscript.  Within 24 hrs. She got back to me and the first thing she said to me was a complete shocking disappointment, I cried all night.
“Gina it’s good but not good. It’s not publishable.”  I’m like wtf do you mean??
“Rewrite it.” She handed me her signed book and I walked away crying.
I spent hours upon hours writing my first romance novel and this woman just told me my manuscript is not publishable!!   My dreams shattered, I wasn’t a good writer.  So I sat down at that time I didn’t have a computer I rewrote my whole manuscript twice prior to submitting it to a writing competition rather than submitting it to a publisher. Well guess what I won the grand prize! My award winning novel was published and the rest is history.  Taking the advice of my favorite author to rewrite it with passion.  Thank you Debbie, you made me what I am today.  Authors if your manuscript has been rejected more than a few times please rewrite it; make sure that you write something that a publisher wants to publish and the readers to read.

Gina thanks so much for spending time with us.  Can you let us know where to follow XoXo Publishing, and you as well?

Thank you Aaron for this wonderful opportunity. Gina
