Finding Fiction Friday - Jill Knapp

Meet her before you can buy her!  Ok ... in retrospect that sounds really wrong, but I am happy to have on my blog today Jill Knapp, whose first novel with HarperImpulse releases next month.  First, a little bit about Jill ...

Recently signed by Harper Impulse/ Harper Collins, Jill Knapp is a native New Yorker who is the author of the series "What Happens To Men When They Move To Manhattan?" (out July 24th). A former adjunct professor of Psychology at her Alma Mater, she received a Masters degree in Psychology from the New School For Social Research in Manhattan. A regular contributor to the Huffington Post, and The High Tea Cast; Jill discusses entertainment, dating, and the differences between city and suburban lifestyles.   In addition she competed in and taught figure skating for over a decade.

Jill, before we get into your writing, tell us a bit about your experiences as a Huffington Post blogger.

I have been blogging for Huff Po since 2011 or 2012 now (I have lost track!). Mainly I write about dating and women’s issues. I have gone on a lot of horrible dates, so I like to turn them into funny, yet cautionary tales for other women. I really like writing for them and wish I had the time to do it more often, but being an author takes up 90% of my writing time! Here is a link to my archive so you can check out my articles for yourself! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jill-knapp/

When did you first think about writing for publication and how was that transition from blogging to fiction?

There really wasn’t a transition. I have started writing my first book before I ever became a blogger for anyone. It took me a very long time to complete the first novel because I was working two jobs and I had moved from Staten Island to Brooklyn at the time. I had taken a lot of creative writing courses in college. I always loved to write, but at the time I was on a different path- career wise. After completing my M.A in psychology, I realized that path was not for me. I decided I wanted to write full time. It was something I truly love doing, and I have never felt that way about any other line of work.

Tell us one thing about yourself that you think might surprise us.

I eat ice cream every single day of my life! My day is not complete unless I get to eat ice cream.

The official cover reveal was
yesterday at Bleach House Library.
Check them out too!
Your debut novel “What Happens To Men When They Move to Manhattan?” is coming out next month.  Tell us about it!

What Happens To Men... was originally a self-published novel called “Chase”. It’s the first novel in a series of New Adult books I am working on. I was fortunate enough to have Kimberley Young and Charlotte Ledger over at HarperImpulse, HarperCollins, read my manuscript and like it! I did annoy them a bit until they finally read it, but I like to think that my stalking (er, I mean persistence) paid off.

The book is about a 23-year-old woman named Amalia who is living in Manhattan while pursuing her M.A. at New York University. She has a boyfriend named Nicholas who she considers to be her “soul-mate”, but her eye keeps wandering over to a guy in her school named Michael. Apart from her relationship drama, she has a best friend named Cassandra who she has known practically her entire life, a new friend named Olivia who seems to be the only level headed person she knows, and a crazy family who constantly forgets about her existence. Amalia works her way through love and city life and tries to find what is worth the chase at the end of it all.

How long did you live in New York and what about it made you choose it as a setting for your book?  Did you have experiences that inspired the book?

I lived in NY almost my entire life. I lived there for 27 years before moving to NJ for a year, and then taking the leap to move down south to North Carolina. I like to think that in my novel, New York itself is a main character. The city is so full of life, possibilities, and also heartache and despair. Living there is literally the best of times, and the worst of times, so I wanted to write a book about what it really felt like to be young and trying to make it in Manhattan.

If there is one character you’ve written or are writing that you would really like people to meet, who would it be and why?

Definitely Amalia. Her personality is somewhere in the middle of her two friends’, Olivia and Cassandra. She deals with a lot of heartbreak and a bad times, but still manages to get through it. I think even though she still has a lot of growing up to do (which you will see throughout the book series), she is still a great person.

What about being published with HarperImpulse and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

Probably how nice everyone has been! I love working with everyone with HarperImpulse and only wish I lived closer to everyone so I could see my co-workers more often.

What other things do you have bouncing around in your head for the future?

I wrote a Young Adult Fantasy novel called Golem Glam that I am really hoping will get picked up!

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

  1. What is your favorite word? Persnickety
  2. What is your least favorite word? It’s really more of a phrase- At least.
  3. What turns you on? Good manners
  4. What turns you off? Conceited snobs
  5. What sound or noise do you love? The ocean
  6. What sound or noise do you hate? frogs
  7. What is your favorite curse word? The F word (Thank you, James Lipton ;-) )
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Screenwriter
  9. What profession would you not like to do? Accounting
  10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? You did the best you could.
  11. What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you? Can I turn your book into a movie, and pay you a million dollars?

Jill, thanks so much for spending time with us.  Can you let us know where to follow you, and where we can go to purchase your books?

What Happens to Men When They Move To Manhattan? will be available for purchase on July 24th from Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com!

Finding Fiction Friday - Lynn Montagano

I am very pleased to welcome to the blog romance author and former TV news writer Lynn Montagano, fresh off the April release of her debut novel with HarperImpulse!

A fresh, new voice in contemporary romance, Lynn is a former TV news writer who decided to take the plunge and write a novel. She's thrilled that her debut, Catch My Breath, was published by Harper Impulse in April 2014.

Lynn grew up in a small town in Rhode Island before venturing out into the world. An avid traveler, she's been as far away as Australia and as close as Canada. Her favorite place to visit is London.

For now, the small town New Englander hangs her hat in Northern California. If you can see her through the fog, wave hello.

Lynn, before we get into your contemporary romance writing, tell us a bit about your experiences as a TV news writer.

It’s not as glamorous as you would think! I worked the evening and late news shift so I’d walk into the newsroom at 4pm and have to jump into writing right away for the 5pm and 6pm shows. Most days it was pretty tame but there was the occasional breaking news story that the producers would assign to me. Those were more stressful because information was constantly changing and I had to be sure the correct info was added to the script.

Writing the other stories was pretty straight-forward. I’d either have to condense an article into a 30 second read or piece together information from press releases, police reports, etc. The most important aspect was writing the story in a clear, conversational tone, so it would sound natural coming out of the anchor’s mouth. I always had their voices in my head when I’d write.

Don’t get me wrong. There were days when I felt like banging my head against the desk or hiding in an editing suite but for the most part I loved it. The people I worked with all had big personalities and were fun to be around.

When did you first think about writing for publication and how was that transition from news to fiction?

When I decided to write my series I wasn’t planning on having it published. I just sort of wrote it for myself as a challenge and then put it aside. The transition from news to fiction, for me, was easy. Since I’d always written with somebody else’s voice in my head, creating the characters and their dialogue came very naturally for me. I also enjoyed the freedom of writing something longer than 30 seconds. Something else that was helpful in the transition from news to novel was the practice of self-editing. When I wrote a news story, I couldn’t be overly wordy. That definitely helped in tightening the prose and keeping the pace of the story moving.

Tell us one thing about yourself that you think might surprise us.

I can juggle. Not chainsaws or burning sticks or anything! Just basic, little things like golf balls, tennis balls, etc. I learned when I was a freshman in high school for a musical we were doing. It was called Under the Big Top and some of the cast had to juggle on stage. I didn’t have to but was curious to learn so I did.

Your book “Catch My Breath” has been out for a couple of months, please tell us about it.

Catch My Breath follows the emotionally charged romance of all-American girl, Lia Meyers and mysterious Englishman, Alastair Holden. Both of them are trying to overcome painful pasts and the story is their journey to each other. It’s sassy, feisty, humorous, frustrating and, yes, sexy.

Is the anticipation the same for the pending print release as it was for the e-book release?  (Note to readers: “Catch My Breath” will be released in print on July 10 and is available for pre-order.)

It totally is! This is the first novel I’ve ever written and to see it released in print is an absolute dream come true. I can’t wait. I may sleep with it under my pillow for a few nights….

What made you decide on Scotland as a setting for your first novel?

I love the United Kingdom. Love it. I’ve been there so many times I feel like an honorary resident. I was on vacation in Scotland about 8 years ago with a friend of mine and had been toying around with different places for my characters to meet. Since the story revolves around an American girl and a British guy, I thought Scotland would be a great place to start their journey. Having a trans-Atlantic romance also enabled me to use a few different settings, like Orlando and London, too.

If there is one character you’ve written or are writing that you would really like people to meet, who would it be and why?

I’ve only ever written the characters from this series! I think people would really like Lia, and her friends, Stephanie and Darren if they met them. Alastair, too, even though he’s a bit of a pill sometimes. I wanted to create characters that were real and that I would be friends with if they existed. I look at Lia, Stephanie and Darren as people you can identify with, laugh with (or at) and root for, just like any friend you’d have in real life.

Alastair is the type of person who, although can be challenging, has much more depth than he reveals. I’ve known people like him and can also identify with his tendency to be closed off. I genuinely think people would enjoy spending time with each one of them.

What about being published with HarperImpulse and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

There’s a saying we use in television  - “Hurry up and wait.” Basically, everything is of the utmost importance and has to be done immediately and then…..nothing. There’s a lot of waiting in the book industry. More than I expected. Thankfully, I’m a patient person so it doesn’t bother me at all but I think it’s important for an aspiring author to know that right off the bat. When things get moving, they move at lightning speed. Until then, grab a tea or coffee, sit back and relax.

Is there someone you can point to as being your biggest encouragement in moving forward with writing?

Obviously, my close friends and family have been my biggest supporters. What I didn’t expect was the amount of support I’d receive from writing communities and other aspiring authors. I’ve met some really great people over the last few years and we’re all each other’s cheerleaders.

This is my first time being published and having so many friends, family members, bloggers and readers encouraging me is fantastic. And I haven’t even mentioned my editor, Charlotte, and the entire team at Harper Impulse! I’m truly grateful for all their support.

What is next up for you?

I’m putting the final touches on my edits for the second book in this series, called Unravel Me, while at the same time polishing up the third book, called Effortless. It’ll be a busy summer that’s for sure!

I’ve also started outlining some thoughts for a new contemporary romance with a dash of paranormal. Stay tuned….

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

  1. What is your favorite word? YES
  2. What is your least favorite word? No
  3. What turns you on? A great sense of humor, people who don’t take themselves too seriously….and Tom Brady.
  4. What turns you off? People who are constantly negative or never see the joy in anything
  5. What sound or noise do you love? The absolute silence of snow falling
  6. What sound or noise do you hate? When someone chews with their mouth open. Gross.
  7. What is your favorite curse word? It’s more of a phrase than a word: Christ on a cracker
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Criminal psychologist for the FBI. And I’ve always wanted to be the White House Press Secretary.
  9. What profession would you not like to do? Anything where I’d have to get dirty, like cleaning out a sewer.
  10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? “Well done, Lynn. The martini bar is to the left.”
  11. What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you? “Who are you wearing?” (as I’m walking the red carpet at the premiere of the movie/TV series based on my trilogy).

Lynn, thanks so much for spending time with us.  Can you let us know where to follow you, and where we can go to purchase your books?

Thank you, Aaron! This has been so much fun.

Finding Fiction Friday - Rae Rivers

Today we are continuing our two-day spotlight on Rae Rivers with our Finding Fiction Friday interview!  Rae has burst onto the scene with her "Keepers" series published by Harper Impulse.  First, a brief self-introduction ...

I’m an avid reader and writer with a passion for writing romance novels. I live in Cape
Town, South Africa, with my gorgeous husband, two beautiful children and a zoo of house pets.
Besides writing, I love family time, the outdoors, travelling, watching TV series, reading and
chocolate.

Rae, when did you first think about writing for publication and how did it all come about?

I’ve been writing since the age of 12 years old but only started thinking of publication about a year or two ago.  I wrote the first book in my series, The Keepers: Archer and submitted it to HarperCollins. Fortunately, they were very enthusiastic about my vision for the series and offered me a four book deal.  It’s been a whirl of excitement and hard work since then.

Tell us one thing about yourself that you think might surprise us.

I’m just an ordinary girl, a mom and wife … with a huge imagination!

Before we get to your ongoing series, tell us a bit about your book “Cat Got Your Tongue?”  I get the feeling there’s a lot of fun to be had with this book.

Cat Got Your Tongue? was my first book signed with a publisher so it holds a very special place in my heart.  I loved the premise of this book as well as the couple – they’re so sexy together!  Art heists, cat burglars, billionaires and bodyguards.  It was so much fun to write.

Now, yesterday (yes yesterday!) saw the release of the second book of your paranormal romance series “The Keepers”.  Give us the scoop on the series and the characters.

The series consists of a powerful witch protected by three warrior brothers, her Keepers.  They are her allies, her friends, and her fierce protectors and together, they fight to maintain the balance of nature. Three brothers, three stories, lots of action and hot romance!

Since you have written both, do you see a big difference between writing contemporary and paranormal romances?  Does one or the other come easier to you, or is it just whichever story grabs you?

It’s definitely what grabs me.  Before my Keepers series, I’d only ever written contemporary romances so it was a surprise when out of the blue, a witch came to mind with a story to tell – and she came with three handsome brothers!  (How could I resist?)  Fortunately, I pushed my comfort zone into the paranormal and since then, I’m addicted to the genre.  I love the flexibility of creating my own mythology and world that’s real to my characters.  It’s been so much fun!

What about being published with HarperImpulse and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

That writing takes up the least amount of my time – and it’s my favourite part of being an author!  There is so much else involved with being a published author – marketing, social media, research, admin … the list is endless!  But my goal for the rest of this year is to focus more on writing.

Is there someone you can point to as being your biggest encouragement in moving forward with writing?

Most certainly my husband and my best friend.  Their encouragement and belief in my writing dream has been priceless to me.  Since being published, I’ve had an army of authors, family and friends, my editors, bloggers and readers who encourage me in different ways.  I’m so grateful to everyone for their support.

Of course you have the third book in the Keepers trilogy, but what else have you been tossing around for the future?

I have a few ideas for after I’ve completed the final book of the series, The Keepers: Ethan.  I’m still processing the direction I should go with this but there will definitely be more of the hot romance, action and drama that readers have enjoyed from my books so far.  Watch this space!

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

  1. What is your favorite word? Lovely and wow.
  2. What is your least favorite word? No.
  3. What turns you on? I’m going to go with “what makes you happy?” for this question!  I’d say … a massage!
  4. What turns you off? Laziness, mess
  5. What sound or noise do you love? Sound of my children laughing, the ocean, my hubby’s voice.
  6. What sound or noise do you hate? My children arguing, an unwatched TV blaring in the living room, my inconsiderate rooster that crows too early in the morning, and high-pitched noises – chaotic environments freak me out!
  7. What is your favorite curse word? Lol, for me or my characters?
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I’d love to be able to sing and reach people through music but as singing is not my strongest attribute, I’ll stick to singing alone in the car and rather opt to reach people with my stories!
  9. What profession would you not like to do? Wrestling.  Or anything involving spiders.
  10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? Welcome!
  11. What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you?  Would you mind signing my copy of your book?  (A bit hard to do as my books aren’t in paperback yet but one day, hearing these words will make my day!)

Rae, thanks so much for spending time with us.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog – the questions have been so much fun!

Finding Fiction Friday - Sun Chara

Today's Finding Fiction Friday features the positively glowing Sun Chara, HarperImpulse author of contemporary romance!  Please welcome her ...

Sun Chara, a multi-published, JABBIC winner Manhattan Millionaire's Cinderella, keys sexy, hip 'n fun contemporary romance, high adventure historical romance, and any genre that knocks at her imagination. Globetrotting for lore while keeping tabs on Hollywood leads...she loves the challenge of creating stories for book and screen. Designer frappuccinos with whipping cream and sprinkles on top make everyday a celebration! - See more at HarperImpulse

Sun, when did you first think about writing for publication and how did it all come about?

I think it all began when I was in 12th grade and got the only A in English Creative Writing. I’d also been reading Harlequin Romances/Presents for years (under the covers with flashlight LOL!) and so enjoyed them that I thought maybe I could… and so I started on this crazy, exciting writer’s journey penning stories of love, adventure, intrigue!

Tell us one thing about yourself that you think might surprise us.

I’m tougher than I look. :)  I’m about 4’11’’ and sometimes people forget that the strongest and best things come in small packs! Ho! Ho! Ho! Watch out world…I’m globetrotting via cyberspace with books in tow! :)

First, tell us about your book “Manhattan Millionaire’s Cinderella”.

Ooh, I love this book! The characters are so cool! Cade is an alpha male set against matrimony, but to save his global corporation, he has to get muzzled…er…hitched. Nina the mouse that turned sexy vixen definitely will not be a notch on this stud’s belt, but he makes her an offer she can’t refuse—the much needed funds to find her missing father, a former employee of Cade’s Corp. The plot thickens, she skips out on him, and sparks fly all the way to the mountain shack where Cade is determined Nina, in Cinderella mode, will repay every penny with interest…his way, his time, his pleasure.  But of course, nothing is, as it seems… It’s a sexy, hip ‘n fun story!

You also have a novella out, “All Wrapped Up in You”.  Give us some insight into the protagonist of the story, Ellie.

When Ellie hooked up with 'Prince Charming', world-renown neurosurgeon, Peter Medeci, she thought her dreams had come true.  But the demands of being the model wife to his career triggers a mutiny within her; she ditches the 'royal' life until he sees her as more than his bedroom playmate.

You’ve called yourself a “globetrotter” and said that you try to bring those experiences forth in your writing.  Where have you been that you would most like to be a setting for one of your stories?

I’ve been across the USA, Canada, Mexico, Cyprus, Greece, France/Paris, Barbados, Bermuda, England…love London and the Brits! Eventually, I’d like to have a story set in each of these places…and other hot spots of the world.

If there is one character you’ve written or are writing that you would really like people to meet, who would it be and why?

I think people will fall in love with Cade and Nina in Manhattan Millionaire’s Cinderella. As one reviewer put it: ‘Cade and Nina will leave you breathless.’

What about being published with HarperImpulse and the book industry in general has most surprised you?

I looove the Harper Impulse team! I really do believe we’re in a romance revolution to take over the world! Yay!!! What surprised me most is that as more pubs go digital first, the author has to do an enormous amount of promotion for a book’s success…both challenging and exciting!

Is there someone you can point to as being your biggest encouragement in moving forward with writing?

What gave me a major boost of confidence and validated my writing aspirations was a contest judge. I’d entered the national RWA Golden Heart contest several years ago, with a manuscript now titled: Recluse Millionaire, Reluctant Bride, and the judge took time to write this on her score sheet: “Writing is terrific…when I judge one this good…I’ve been judging the Golden Heart and the Rita for nearly 20 years…this is one of the best I have judged.”  Flora Styre, #1310/RWA Charter Member

What do you have cooking next?

So much is bubbling over, kitchen…er…my office is a mess. :) The Price of Passion is in lovely Charlotte’s inbox, a third book is in the works for July which is an offshoot of All Wrapped Up in You, am jazzed about the RWA Conference in July in San Antonio, Texas where I’ll get to meet the fabulous HI authors, Lynn Marie Hulsman and Lynn Montagano Zeuthen.  After that or hopefully before, I have to check up on a western historical romance, Gamblin’ Lady that was supposed to be out from another pub, a couple of regency type novellas to finish before Christmas…and then, I have a story set on Barbados…ooh, so exciting this pub biz! Oh, and did I say Promos?! :)

To close the interview, I have ten questions for you, plus one.  Here they go!

  1. What is your favorite word?  Love
  2. What is your least favorite word?  Hate
  3. What turns you on?  Laughter ‘n good times
  4. What turns you off? Rudeness
  5. What sound or noise do you love? Ocean waves
  6. What sound or noise do you hate? Hgh-pitched whining
  7. What is your favorite curse word? Don’t have one…thumbs down on profanity all the way
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Acting/filmmaking…and not attempting, am doing
  9. What profession would you not like to do? Selling shoes
  10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? Heaven does exist, and ‘Welcome home, My child.’
  11. What question have you never been asked, that you wish someone would ask you? How did you make your first million? (Am still working on the million tho :) )
